This is Rob.\u00a0 He’s an anesthetist.\u00a0 It says so right on his cotton scrubs cap.\u00a0 Dr. Rob wears his name and position on his cap for patient safety -while tags can be worn, they get covered by surgical gowns, but caps don’t.\u00a0 He is pushing for others to do so too, for everyone in the hospital to know names and roles to avoid reoccurence of errors due to staff misidentification.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve heard of medical students mistaken for senior trainees then instructed to finish operations. Arrests where requests to perform cardiac compressions aren\u2019t followed for some time \u2013 no one knowing who the request was directed at.<\/p>\n

The WHO introduced a tick box to ensure theatre staff introduce themselves prior to every operation.<\/p>\n

This box is always ticked yet the procedure rarely performed. Without access to the stories of adversity it\u2019s just another tick box.

The hard part isn’t the labelling on the caps, but that it goes against the protocol, the norm, the status quo.<\/p>\n

Some nurses comment \u2013 \u2018It\u2019s a great idea, we should all wear hats like this\u2019 \u2013 to which I reply \u2018You can\u2019.<\/p>\n

But they can\u2019t \u2013 it hasn\u2019t come via the \u2018proper\u2019 channels. We\u2019re conditioned in a hierarchical top down system \u2013 step outside this at your peril \u2013 it\u2019s far more likely to end your career than deliver change. I know \u2013 I\u2019ve touched that void.<\/p>\n

One group started wearing the hats only for a nurse in charge to insist they stop. They were told it looked \u2018unprofessional\u2019 \u2013 perhaps what was really meant was \u2018non-conformist\u2019. It doesn\u2019t matter \u2013 they got the message.
