From Richard Nixon\u2019s tapes to the modern \u201cblank check\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

History doesn\u2019t whisper.
It contradicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A leader can support a nation
while degrading its people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That contradiction isn\u2019t rare\u2014
it\u2019s a pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nixon proved it first.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In private,
Richard Nixon spoke in slurs,
counted Jews in government,
warned of a \u201ccabal,\u201d
questioned loyalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On tape\u2014undeniable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But in public policy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He helped save Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Yom Kippur War<\/em>,
he authorized a massive resupply\u2014
Operation Nickel Grass<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weapons. Aid. Survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not out of principle\u2014
but strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israel wasn\u2019t a people to him.
It was an asset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Cold War lever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the blueprint:
Support the state.
Disparage the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then came the modern echo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump didn\u2019t hide the support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Embassy moved to Jerusalem.
Golan recognized.
Policy tilted\u2014hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A \u201cblank check,\u201d many called it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But listen to the rhetoric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDisloyal.\u201d
\u201cVote wrong.\u201d
\u201cHate their religion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old trope\u2014
dual loyalty\u2014
repackaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same implication:
Your identity is conditional.
Your worth is political.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nixon said it privately.
Trump said it out loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the cost of transactional support.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When backing a country
isn\u2019t rooted in respect for its people,
it becomes currency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A shield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A talking point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A defense against criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLook what I did for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even while reinforcing
the stereotypes that endanger you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the paradox.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protection\u2014
with strings attached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Support\u2014
without respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety\u2014
as long as it\u2019s useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s not allyship.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s a transaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there is the third way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not a transaction. Not a \u201cblank check.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bernie Sanders doesn’t trade in tropes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is the friend who tells you the truth because he wants you to survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He doesn’t offer a shield for a government’s “power play.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He offers a hand to the people themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stood on the Senate floor <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and broke the silence: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is not antisemitic to hold a government accountable.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn’t just speak. He acted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He led the charge to condition the aid\u2014 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

support is not a gift for the powerful, but a responsibility to the innocent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He understands: You don\u2019t protect a people by fueling the extremist fires that put a target on their backs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t “support” a nation by staying silent while its leaders trade their moral safety for a “power play.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

True allyship isn’t \u201cLook what I did for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s standing for the human rights that keep everyone safe\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

from the kibbutz to the refugee camp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No strings. No conditional worth. No “loyalty tests.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One side offers protection as long as you’re useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other offers respect because you\u2019re human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the difference between a deal\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and a principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the difference between a transaction\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and an ally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
