Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson accepted the\u00a0Generation Award Monday night at the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards with an inspiring speech of how he decided to just be himself in Hollywood, and values being nice over being “important”:<\/p>\n
“The most powerful thing that we can be is ourselves<\/strong>,\u201d he said, before going back in time and recalling his early interactions with the Hollywood machine, when the six-foot-four, 275-pound pro wrestler showed up ready for new opportunities. \u201cThey didn\u2019t know what the hell to do with me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
At first, he was convinced to change himself in order to fit into their mold. It took him a few years to realize that he didn\u2019t actually\u00a0have to<\/em>\u00a0do that. \u201cI wasn\u2019t going to conform to Hollywood; Hollywood was going to conform to me<\/strong>,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, Hollywood conformed to me and here I am with all of you getting the Generation Award…<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s not enough,\u201d The Rock said. \u201cBecause there\u2019s another side to being your authentic self, your true self<\/strong>, and that\u2019s the side that the magic is on. That\u2019s the side that\u2019s gold.\u201d<\/p>\n
…\u201cYou gotta recognize the joy and the responsibility of bringing everybody with you. We bring everybody with us, and you do that by being kind, by being compassionate, by being inclusive, and straight-up just being good to people because that matters,<\/strong>\u201d he said. \u201cAnd if you can hit that place, that\u2019s when you become powerful, that\u2019s when you become influential, that\u2019s when you can have real global influence in a positive way.\u201d<\/p>\n
He summed it all up with a quote he\u2019s lived by since he was 15 years old: \u201cIt\u2019s nice to be important, but it\u2019s more important to be nice.<\/strong>\u201d
