A farmer had some puppies he needed to
\nsell. He painted a sign advertising the 4
\npups, and set about nailing it to a post on
\nthe edge of his yard.
\nAs he was driving the last nail into the
\npost, he felt tug on his overalls
\nHe looked down into the eyes of a little
\nboy.
\n“Mister,” he said, “| want to buy one of
\nyour puppies.’
\n“Well,” said the farmer, as he rubbed the
\nsweat of the back of his neck, “these
\npuppies come from fine parents and cost
\na good deal of money.”
\nThe boy dropped his head for a moment
\nThen reaching deep into his pocket
\nhe pulled out a handful of change and
\nheld it up to the farmer. “I’ve
\ngot Two dollars & thirty cents. Is that
\nenough to take a look?”
\n“Sure,” said the farmer. And with that he
\nlet out a whistle. “Here Dolly!” he called.
\nOut from the doghouse and down ramp
\nran Dolly followed by four little balls of
\nfur.
\nThe little boy pressed his face against the
\nchain link fence. His eyes danced with
\ndelight.
\nAs the dogs made their way to the fence,
\nthe little boy noticed
\nsomething else stirring inside the
\ndoghouse.
\nSlowly another little ball appeared, this
\none noticeably smaller.
\nDown the ramp it slid. Then in a awkward
\nmanner, the little pup began hobbling
\ntoward the others, doing its best to catch
\nup…
\n“I want that one,” the little boy said
\npointing to the runt.
\nThe farmer knelt down at the boy’s side
\nand said, “Son, you don’t want that
\npuppy. He will never be able to run and
\nplay with you like these other dogs
\nwould.”
\nWith that the little boy stepped back from
\nthe fence, reached down, and began
\nrolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing
\nso he revealed a steel brace running
\ndown both sides of his leg attaching itself
\nto a specially made shoe.
\nLooking back up at the farmer, he said,
\n“You see sir, I don’t run too well myself,
\nand he will need someone who
\nunderstands.”
\nWith tears in his eyes, the farmer reached
\ndown and picked up the little pup.
\nHolding it carefully he handed it to the
\nlittle boy.
\n“How much?” asked the little boy.
\n“No charge,” answered the farmer,
