I’m vegan because I believe every sentient being has a right to their own life. I believe the best thing anyone can do is stop participating in this system entirely. But even if you aren’t there yet, we should all be able to agree on one thing: Unnecessary, industrial-scale torture is wrong.
Right now, the U.S. House has passed a provision in the 2026 Farm Bill that effectively mandates cruelty. It’s called the Save Our Bacon (SOB) Act, and it is the single greatest threat to animal welfare in our history. You’ve probably noticed how SOB spells something else too.
The War on the “Bare Minimum”
Ironically, May is Be Kind to Animals Month. Yet, while the public celebrates compassion, the U.S. House has chosen this exact moment to advance a bill that would codify cruelty.
For years, we’ve fought for the absolute floor of human decency. Laws like California’s Proposition 12 simply require that pigs, calves, and hens have enough space to stand up, turn around, and stretch their limbs.
That’s it. That is the “radical” bar the meat industry wants to destroy.
The SOB Act would nullify these state laws, allowing corporations to:
- Freeze mother pigs in time: Forcing them into gestation crates where they cannot turn around for their entire lives.
- Chain newborn calves: Keeping them immobilized in metal crates to ensure their flesh stays “tender” for veal.
- Wipe out 1,000 laws: Harvard Law School warns this could trash up to 1,000 state-level protections for animal welfare and food safety.
Efficiency is Not an Excuse
The meat lobby claims this is about “lowering costs.” Call it what it is: calculated cruelty for the sake of a higher profit margin. They want to treat living, breathing souls like inanimate widgets in a factory.
If you can’t give up meat today, that really sucks – but don’t let them take away the most basic, pathetic shred of comfort these animals have left.
Take Action: 60 Seconds to Stop the Suffering
The bill is now in the Senate. This is the final stand.
- Call the Senate Switchboard: 202-224-3121
- The Message: “Oppose any Farm Bill containing the Save Our Bacon Act.”
- California: Contact Senator Alex Padilla and tell him to keep fighting for Prop 12.
Being vegan is the goal, but stopping this act is the bare minimum we owe them. Please make the call.
