Norouz: The Dance of the Earth and Sun

Happy Norouz, Persian New Year, Spring flowers and green sprouts bathed in sunlight, symbolizing life and hope
Norouz marks the first day of the first month (Farvardin) in the Iranian calendar.

Norouz (sometimes spelled Nowruz), literally meaning “New Day,” marks the exact moment of the vernal equinox, when day and night are equal, signaling the beginning of spring. This precise instant is celebrated with joy wherever Persians live – whether in Iran, the United States, London, or beyond – reminding us that the cycle of nature connects us all.

As part of the celebrations, many families practice khāneh tekāni, or spring cleaning, tidying and refreshing their homes to welcome the light, life, and energy of the new season. Homes are arranged with the Haft-Seen table, featuring sprouts, apples, coins, and other symbolic items that honor renewal, prosperity, and growth.

Beyond the rituals, Nowruz invites us to embrace life, hope, and connection. Just as the earth awakens with blossoms and green sprouts, we too can nurture kindness, love, and awareness in our hearts and communities.

This year, let’s celebrate not only the changing of seasons but also the spark of life and hope that Nowruz brings. Wherever you are, take a moment to plant a seed – literally or metaphorically – of renewal, joy, and harmony.

If you ever want to know when Norouz – the Persian New Year – is, all you have to do is Google: When is the start of Spring. This year it is Friday, March 20th, 7:46 AM on the West Coast, 10:46AM on the East Coast, 2:46 PM in London, and 6:16 PM in Iran – Here’s for a happier 1405 🌱🌞🎉✨🌸🌼

Transliteration:
Norouz: Raghs-e Khāk o Khorshid

Sedā-ye pā-ye bahār miād,
Va zamin, khastegi-sh ro be shokoofe-hā mispāre.
Biā mā ham bā tabiat ham-sedā beshim,
Dine-moon ro be mehrabāni va eshgh adā konim.
Nowruz yani āshti bā khod, āshti bā donyā,
Yani sabz shodan dar ghalb-e lahze-hā, na faghat dar zarf-e sabze.
Emsāl, bogzār noor-e omid dar cheshm-hā-yemoon bargh bezane.
Eid-et mobārak, rafigh-e rooz-hā-ye now.

English Translation:
Norouz: The Dance of Earth and Sun

The footsteps of spring are approaching,
And the earth entrusts its weariness to the blossoms.
Let us, too, find harmony with nature,
And pay our debt with kindness and love.
Nowruz means making peace with oneself, peace with the world;
It means turning green in the heart of moments, not just in a dish of sprouts.
This year, let the light of hope sparkle in our eyes.
Happy New Year, friend of new days
